Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about ABN Tax itself
What is different about ABN Tax?
ABN Tax has a unique business model which differs to most accounting and taxation firms in five key areas:
| 1. | We make your bookkeeper a part of the process. |
| 2. | We charge fixed prices and we tell you what they are before we start the work. |
| 3. | We have turnaround times that we commit to and stand by. |
| 4. | We don't charge you or your bookkeeper to talk to us over the phone. |
| 5. | We deliver our products and services electronically. |
How do I become a client of ABN Tax?
Your bookkeeper must be an ABN Tax Client Manager in order for you to be a client of ABN Tax. Check with your bookkeeper to see whether they are.
What Role does a Bookkeeper Play in the ABN Tax Business Model?
Many accounting and taxation firms do not involve a client's bookkeeper as much as they should. This can result in costly duplication of work. ABN Tax does it differently.
We refer to the bookkeeper as the ABN Tax Client Manager because they play a central role in managing the relationship between ABN Tax and the client.
In broad terms, the ABN Tax Client Manager will have the task of:
| 1. | Supplying ABN Tax with your accounting software file; |
| 2. | Collating additional information we require in order to complete your tax returns and financial statements; |
| 3. | Completing various checklists and reconciliations; |
| 4. | Attempting to resolve any queries that we raise; |
| 5. | Arranging for completed financial statements and tax returns to be signed by you and returned to us; |
| 6. | Recording into your accounting software file any re-alignment journals which we provide at the completion of the job. |
Of course, this only describes the role of the ABN Tax Client Manager in relation to year-end compliance services. The ABN Tax Client Manager may also have a role to play in other aspects of our relationship such as corporate secretarial services or the variety of other services that you may require of us from time to time.

Does ABN Tax outsource any of the work?
Absolutely not. ABN Tax is staffed by a team of highly qualified accountants and tax agents with vast industry experience. We do all of the work at our Brisbane office using qualified professional staff. Under no circumstances do we outsource work elsewhere.
How does ABN Tax charge for its services?
Many accounting and taxation firms do not make their charges known and the client learns of the cost for the first time once the work has been completed. ABN Tax does it differently.
At ABN Tax, we make sure that there are no nasty surprises for the client when it comes time to paying our bill. In relation to Compliance Services, we provide an upfront written quote. We do not start work until you have approved that quote. As far as our other services are concerned, many of these are performed at fixed prices which are detailed in our comprehensive fee menu. Visit the Our Services page for more details.
How does ABN Tax deal with workflow?
Managing workflow to meet the needs and expectations of our clients is essential. Our workflow comes in two forms:
- Urgent tasks which require immediate attention. Examples include urgent tax advice regarding the sale of a property, or the giving of financial information to a lender for finance approval;
- Non-urgent tasks which require less immediate attention. An example is the routine preparation of financial statements and income tax returns.
We endeavour to deal with urgent tasks as quickly as possible and sometimes this can mean that there will be some delay in the completion of non-urgent tasks, however we still aim to manage non-urgent tasks within a stated turnaround time.
ABN Tax commits to a 6-week turnaround policy on Compliance Services. Your ABN Tax Client Manager has access to a secure, on-line system called Job Watch which enables them to check the status of your work at any point in time.
Am I the type of client that would be suitable for ABN Tax?
ABN Tax is a fully staffed accounting and taxation firm, backed by a team of highly qualified accountants and tax agents with vast industry experience. We place a high emphasis on knowledge and training and remain at the cutting edge of all things accounting and tax.
As such, ABN Tax has the technical capability to act for clients of any size and complexity. The suitability or unsuitability of a client to ABN Tax will instead turn on whether certain circumstances are at play.
The following clients would be unlikely to be suitable for ABN Tax:
- Clients who are adamant that that have regular face-to-face contact with their accountant;
- Clients who would not be willing to involve their bookkeeper in all facets of their taxation affairs;
- Clients who employ different bookkeepers for different facets of their taxation affairs;
- Clients with substantial foreign holdings, such that Australia is not their main tax jurisdiction.
What if I need telephone advice?
Many accounting and taxation firms will charge by the clock for each and every phone call they have with a client. ABN Tax does it differently.
ABN Tax prides itself on providing personalised advice to its clients. Although our business model does not enable face-to-face meetings, we offer the highest quality telephone advice as and when needed.
ABN Tax clients are welcome to telephone us at no cost. If there is a question that can be dealt with there and then, there is no charge. Should the conversation result in the identification of further tasks which will be at a cost, then we'll discuss this with you at the time and get approval before proceeding.
Aside from not having to worry about being charged for every instance that you talk to us, this approach also allows us to break down some of the barriers that might otherwise exist in dealing with you from afar.
Will it be difficult to deal with ABN Tax if I am located in another city?
The ABN Tax business model is premised on the ABN Tax Client Manager being the central figure in the client's affairs - the person that "does the books", looks after the BAS and, now, facilitates the completion of the tax and accounting work. The ABN Tax Client Manager is thus able to play a key role in allaying any concerns that you may have about not being able to meet with ABN Tax face-to-face.
Although the ABN Tax business model does not enable face-to-face contact with clients, this is more than made up for by the close working relationship we would have with your ABN Tax Client Manager and the fact that you can talk to us on the telephone without charge.
Will my data be treated securely and confidentially?
Yes. This is of paramount importance to ABN Tax as it no doubt is to you. As registered tax agents, we are governed by an industry code of conduct which places high emphasis on these issues.
When we ask your ABN Tax Client Manager to send us confidential client information, we will recommend that they do so through our Bookkeeper-Client Connect file transfer facility. This is a secure 128-bit encrypted channel which is protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology.
The information we supply to you and your ABN Tax Client Manager will be sent only to the email addresses that you stipulate.
